National Museum of African Art Field Trip

In late September, students had the opportunity to visit the National Museum of African Art to view a variety of African art pieces and museum labels. They sketched artifacts and copied labels they felt were particularly effective.

One of the highlights of the museum's current exhibits was the reflecting pool of water that the kids could splash their hands in as they watched the way the water's movement changed the projected light.

We were lucky to have beautiful weather for our trip.

Students gathered in the museum's lobby before exploring the exhibits.

50-Word Object Descriptions: Mini Gallery

In English class today, students had the opportunity to display descriptions of objects they feel represent themselves. They transformed their one-page summer homework description assignments into museum labels of 50 words (or fewer). This is just the beginning of our exploration of the museum label genre. Stay tuned as we venture to the African Art Museum in a few weeks and students begin to write labels for artifacts that they will be creating in World Studies. In the meantime, enjoy a glimpse into our classroom "mini gallery"!
